Perfect time to enjoy!
The 2023 Burgundy growing season wrote a narrative of extremes that ultimately demanded vigilance in the vineyard. The story began with a warmer-than-average winter, prompting an unnervingly early budbreak that left vines highly vulnerable. The first major obstacle arrived in early April: severe frost events threatened the nascent buds, particularly in lower-lying Mâconnais and Chablis zones, causing localized panic and minor damage. Yet the real test was the mid-summer crucible. An intense heatwave in July spiked temperatures between 32-36°C, introducing significant drought stress to the canopy. Fortunately, timely rain in August played the role of savior, rescuing the vines from shutdown and rehydrating the crop. For Chardonnay, the heat threatened to completely flay the natural acidity. However, because Chardonnay ripens earlier than Pinot Noir, much of the white fruit was successfully harvested just before the final late-season heat spikes, securing sugar levels around a natural 13% ABV without the need for chaptalization. Within the context of Laurent Chardigny’s history, 2023 ranks solidly in the middle of the pack—it is far more charming and fruit-forward than the austere 2021, but lacks the profound dry extract and concentration of the low-yielding 2020. The 2023 is a vintage of pure pleasure and generous yields rather than monumental, brooding structure. It is ready to drink now and offers tremendous early-drinking appeal.
Listen to Sophie talk about Bourgogne Chardonnay
Style: Balance is strictly functional: a spine of medium-plus acidity holds its own against a modest 13% ABV and light-to-medium body. Length is admittedly medium-minus; the initial burst of citrus and wet stone dissipates quickly once the wine leaves the palate. Intensity resides primarily on the attack rather than the mid-palate, lacking the profound concentration of higher-tier appellations. Complexity is straightforward and tightly wound around two primary axes: crisp orchard fruit and a chalky, mineral linearity. Regarding typicity, this is a highly representative, unadulterated Mâconnais Chardonnay of the 2023 vintage—it relies on immediate tension and energy rather than lees-driven weight or oak sweetness. There is a distinct trade-off to consider here. This wine is not for the buyer seeking the lush, buttery texture of Meursault or the toasted hazelnut depth of a heavily oaked Californian Chardonnay; those drinkers will find this expression far too lean and austere. By purchasing this, you trade mid-palate richness and cellar longevity for immediate, unoaked refreshment and vivid citrus focus. Buyers seeking a touch more roundness and creamy texture at a similar price point might be better served by a Louis Jadot Mâcon-Villages or Joseph Drouhin Laforêt, which often present a more forgiving, lees-touched profile.
Wine Spectator: 87/100
Robert Parker: 87/100
James Suckling: 88/100
Vinous: 88/100
Decanter: 89/100
Temperature: 10-12°C / 50-54°F
Decanting: Not structurally required. 15-30 minutes in a decanter blows off faint reduction, relaxing tight citrus into orchard fruit. At 60-120 minutes, the wine begins to flatten and lose crucial energy.
